Professional solutions for compaction technology and asphalt construction.Successful projects
The dream of flying is taking on new dimensions In Turkey. Since June 2014, a new airport has been under construction in Istanbul which, when completed, will be the world’s largest and set new standards. BOMAG is playing a key role in the project - with over 130 single drum rollers deployed, the largest compaction project in the company's history is being carried out close to the Black Sea coast.

The first contact came about in April 2013 already, soon after the airport construction contract had been awarded to a consortium of five Turkish companies - Cengiz, Mapa, Limak, Kolin and Kalyon. Specialists from BOMAG were asked to present their expertise on soil backfilling and compaction and to carry out initial compaction tests. The goal was to develop a compaction concept for the siltstone, mudstone and marl soils that were to be backfilled, and to ensure efficient, optimal and reliable compacting in the process.
At the beginning of 2015, the time had come for the single drum rollers to begin large-scale compaction. In five large areas alone, 20 rollers are in operation. The soil is compacted in 40 centimetre layers. The compaction requirement is reached in four passes. To simplify the process for the drivers and depending on the soil material, four padfoot and/or polygonal rollers travel in succession over a track, followed by a smooth drum roller that completes and documents the compaction process.
The daily compaction checks posed a challenge. With approximately two million square metres of compacted area per day, 2,500 individual tests are typically required, which is a very time-consuming and costly undertaking. But BOMAG had an efficient solution for this, too. After extensive testing in autumn 2015 and spring 2016, the joint venture was convinced by the performance of the BCM 05 compaction control system and the BOMAG GPS system.
The single drum rollers still have plenty to do before the planned launch of the first phase in February 2018, but they are more than up to the task and proving their efficiency and performance every day. The Turkish joint venture is also very satisfied with BOMAG as a partner and positive about the on-site progress. So the collaboration continues to flourish and BOMAG is doing its part to make the world of flying bigger and wider with its single drum rollers.
