Future-proof: Gas makes you mobile

Boppard, 28.01.2019. From 2019, the Stage V emissions standard will apply to construction machinery within the European Union. Using the example of the BW 120 light tandem roller, BOMAG will be demonstrating three different drive solutions at Bauma 2019 that customers can select individually. A particular highlight is the future-oriented design study with a 30-kW gas engine. Whether in city centres, trenches or tunnels - stricter guidelines will in future increase the demands placed on engine and emissions technology. In Munich, BOMAG will present concrete solutions based on real-world technologies. These range from an efficient diesel engine with a particulate filter to emission reductions and an environmentally friendly gas-powered drive. BOMAG invites Bauma visitors to discuss the alternatives.

On 1 January 2019, the new EU emissions standard V was introduced; it applies to construction machinery and sets limit values for the emission of air pollutants; and for the first time also emission limits for the number of particles (diesel soot). From 2019, stricter emission standards will gradually apply to new construction machinery in accordance with the EU regulation. For many construction machines with diesel engines, a diesel particulate filter (DPF) will therefore also be required to comply with the particle limit values. This benefits health, safety and the environment. Once again, construction companies and municipalities are faced with the question of future-proof drive technologies. Because they need a high level of investment security to maintain and boost their competitiveness in emission-regulated markets. At Bauma (stand FS 1009), BOMAG will be showing the BW 120 light tandem roller with different drive solutions so that construction companies are equipped for both current and tomorrow's emission requirements.

BW 120 design study: When the diesel becomes a gas engine

As a particular highlight, the BW 120 tandem roller with a gas engine awaits Bauma visitors. The highly efficient 30 kW Deutz gas engine provides a comparable output to that of the corresponding diesel engine with particulate filter. The travel speed and compaction performance are similar. The machine is operated with environmentally friendly liquid gas (also LPG for liquefied petroleum gas) in commercially available liquid gas bottles, which can be purchased in DIY stores and petrol stations. One gas bottle enables working for up to five hours. Changing the bottle takes a maximum of 10 minutes and the handling is so simple that personnel only require a short briefing. The major advantage of the gas drive is that it eliminates the need for a complex exhaust aftertreatment system. The gas engine complies with EU emission level V and offers construction companies a convenient alternative for the future.

BW 120: Engine technology meets EU emission standard V

A further product innovation presented by BOMAG at Bauma is the BW 120 tandem roller with diesel particulate filter. This means the machine for medium and small construction projects complies with the EU emissions standard Stage V, which came into force for this machine type on 1 January 2019. The machine has a working width of 1,200 mm and a powerful 24.3 kW Kubota engine. It is particularly suitable for companies that already want to invest in a future-proof machine park today. BOMAG will, of course, also be exhibiting its entire range of light tandem rollers in the 1.5 to 5-ton class - these will also be equipped with the latest engine technology.

BW 120: Less consumption, fewer emissions

Another strategy is provided by the third version of the BW 120 tandem roller with an output of 18.5 kW. The machine is almost as versatile as its big sister. The clear advantage of this solution for emission-regulated markets lies in the lower investment and maintenance costs.
